"Freedom From Fossil Fuels - FFFF"

THE ELIZABETH SWANN - OUR MISSION:

"Construction of a long range vessel with the objective of demonstrating Atlantic, Indian, Pacific ocean, and Mediterranean sea crossings, by way of a world navigation in under 80 days fuelled by hydrogen or hydrogen compounds. To be implemented in stages, Mediterranean and Atlantic as initial demonstrations. Proving long haul, blue water operation, to rival diesel bunker fuel fleets."

WHAT IS THE EU'S RESTORE OCEAN & WATERS MISSION?

With a 2030 target, the EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters" aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments. The Mission’s new approach will address the ocean and waters as one and play a key role in achieving climate neutrality and restoring nature.

Cross-cutting enabling actions will support this objective, in particular broad public mobilisation and engagement and a digital ocean and water knowledge system, known as Digital Twin Ocean.

The Mission supports regional engagement and cooperation through area-based “lighthouses” in major sea/river basins: Atlantic-Arctic, Mediterranean Sea, Baltic-North Sea, and Danube-Black Sea. Mission lighthouses are sites to pilot, demonstrate, develop and deploy the Mission activities across EU seas and river basins.

WHAT ARE EU MISSIONS?

EU Missions are a new way to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges. They have ambitious goals and will deliver tangible results by 2030. (And 'Ambition' is our middle name.)

They will deliver impact by putting research and innovation into a new role, combined with new forms of governance and collaboration, as well as by engaging citizens.

EU Missions are a novelty of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for the years 2021-2027.

WHAT ARE OUR MISSIONS:

The Foundation's missions covers the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. Hence, at least two of the EU's Missions. Sympathetic to the Baltic and Black sea dilemmas. Where, the Swann's general configuration might be adapted to coastal ferry use and river boats. And the general propulsion theory, may be utilized for Container ship and even cruise liners. By way of scaling up. (Please Note: The Foundation is not funded by the EU, UK or any other nation [unless otherwise stated], being an autonomous not-for-profit R&D entity, and is not a registered charity, confirmed by the Commission as not being required to register, leaving us free to operate without potentially restrictive conditions. The Foundation supports - and where practical aims to engage with - all such initiatives, by any and all nations, aimed at de-polluting rivers, seas & oceans as a sovereign organization. The EU's objectives in this #Mission, matches our objectives, thus is supportable.)

1. CONCRETE ACTION

At time of writing, there is no speed record for hydrogen boats or ships, by way of a timed circumnavigation. Nobody has proved that it might be possible to travel the great oceans using renewable energy, at commercial speeds. Our project is thus a practical demonstration event, apart from being a race against time. And, beating global warming, is a race against time. As they say: "Tempus Fugit" (Time Flies).

In creating an event, a race, we hope to raise awareness of these issues. The Elizabeth Swann has been designed and is presently being developed to be the World's Fastest Hydrogen Powered Ship, or boat if you prefer. The project is 'youth' led. The project lead is a local mathematics & engineering student, who is also a UNA Climate and Oceans Ambassador, from 2022.

The proposed "action" shows that it is possible to "prevent'" or even "eliminate" pollution of inland waterways, seas and oceans. In the long term. Provided that we get the message across to all kinds of operators of waterborne transport. Ferry operators, cruise liners and container ships. Mainly, fleet operators, who are at the moment, disillusioned as what technology to adopt in order to comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) targets.

2. AWARENESS & EDUCATION

The Foundation is actively developing a creative awareness, or literacy campaign, involving story generation for books, graphic novels, TV and scripts for films.

The pilot for this ocean literacy campaign is Kulo Luna. A story about a whale that has ingested plastic garbage and gets entangled in fishing gear, rescued by the captain of a zero emission ship.

FREEDOM FROM FOSSIL FUELS: Is the dream of many an eco politician, and now with COP 28 targets tightening up, with greater commitments from the Parties, they will be looking for solutions for their major polluters. This model is on display at a Museum in Sussex, England, when not being worked on, tested or being shown at events. The Cleaner Ocean Foundation is the proud keeper of this and other interesting exhibits.
