GREEN
ENERGY PORTS CONFERENCE
The international conference about green energy technologies at sea ports
was held at Vigo in Spain between the 27th and 29th June 2016.
More than 30 highly experienced specialists and authorities discussed the state-of-the-art energy technologies now being developed or deployed in ports from all over the
world with the aim of using less energy, or performing port
functions more efficiently, which amounts to the same thing.
The objective was and is to formulate a strategy to put the
identified targets in place before or for 2020.

CURRENT
PORT PROJECTS
The Port Authority actively participates in numerous R & D projects in the field of sustainability, environmental improvement and protection.
SAMUEL - The main objective of this project is the elaboration of a feasibility study regarding the development of an LNG supply infrastructure in the Port of Vigo (to build an innovative storage and supply unit). This study will result in the conceptual and innovative design of a floating unit for the supply and storage of marine fuels (mainly LNG), which should also be able to supply electricity and heat to ships.
CORE LNGAS HIVE - The main objective of this project is reducing
atmospheric emissions derived from port activities with a system of supplying electric power to ships by using an engine that uses
Liquefied Natural Gas fuel.
THE COMMERCIAL PORT
The port of Vigo has a privileged geographical position,
geocentric in global sea routes and its natural conditions of
shelter that allow it to be consider as a safe port. The
Port of Vigo is highly specialized in the movement of general merchandise diverse high-valued, being more than 90% of goods moving through Vigo, general cargo, and more than 70% of it, in containers. It also has terminals specialized in ro-ro traffic, ranking,
and is one of the main Spanish ports in traffic of new vehicles, and the first in the ro-ro operation in the coastal strip of the entire Atlantic side of the peninsula.
The high economic value of the goods is explained through this traffic and from of automotive parts, as well as fish products, frozen, fresh and processed - canned -, that make the Port of Vigo one of the major
fishing ports around the world in the traffic of fishing for
human consumption, both in terms of quantity and quality.
The Port of Vigo has more than 90 regular maritime services to major destinations in Europe,
Africa and America. Of these, highlight the lines of ro-ro traffic, at european level, developing a real short sea transport or short sea shipping, as well as at transoceanic level. Special mention requires the Motorway of the seas Vigo-Nantes St. Nazaire, which was officially launched in January 2016, and has now extended its range to the south, to the Morroccan port of Tangiers.
VIGO PORT HISTORY
The origin of the Port Authority of Vigo dates back to November 1881. The roots of the Port come from the first settlements of antiquity, which chose the shelter of the mountains on both sides of the estuary and the mountainous Cνes Islands. Through the ages Vigo's shores have seen Phoenicians, Greeks, Celts and
Romans arrive, towns that were leaving their traces in the inhabitants and in their way of living by the sea. Hordes of Normans, discoverers of the new world and ships of Turkish and English pirates also passed by the Rνa, being witnesses of exception of events like the Battle of Rande, at the beginning of century XVIII. In this same century, a group of entrepreneurs from the distant Costa Brava arrives in Vigo and lays the foundations of our fishing and canning industry, with its salting and brine techniques.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Vigo became the loyal and courageous village, continuing the development of its port, which at that time became the principal north of the peninsula. In the first half of the twentieth century, in a quasi-feverish development, port infrastructures no longer only give berth and shelter, but are also an increasingly important goods depot and warehouse, especially after the arrival of the railroad to the docks. The second half of this century is even more intense, with growing passenger traffic from emigration, the frozen fishing revolution and the arrival of
Citroen in Vigo. Since then, Vigo has been growing
steadily.

The relatively large variety of fish that is auctioned at this
port is considerably more sustainable in blue growth terms
with potentially reduced bycatch
and the overfishing
of one just species.
