CORINA CRETU EUROPEAN UNION COMMISSIONERS

Corina Crețu was born on the 24th of June 1967 in Bucharest. She is a Romanian politician and the incumbent European Commissioner for Regional Policy. Crețu is a member of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD), and former Member of the European Parliament (sitting with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats). Between June 2014 and October 2014, she served as a Vice-President of the European Parliament.

In 2005, Crețu was appointed a member of the Romanian parliamentary delegation to the European Parliament. She was elected Member of the European Parliament (sitting with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats) on January 1, 2007 following the accession of Romania to the European Union, being re-elected as MEP in 2009 and 2014.

EC RESPONSIBILITIES

* Identifying how EU structural and investment funds can be better geared towards creating jobs and growth.

* Protecting the EU budget from fraud by verifying that regional funds are spent according to the rules.

* Continuously monitoring the effectiveness of spending programmes to create regional growth.

* Identifying how the EU Structural and Investment Funds can help establish a European Energy Union and complete the digital single market.

IDEOLOGY -

The European Union established a Commission to act as their executive and to promote its general interests. The Commission is composed of the College of Commissioners comprised of 28 members, including the President and Vice-Presidents. The Commissioners, one from each EU country, are the Commission's political leadership during a 5-year term. Each Commissioner is assigned responsibility for specific policy areas by the President.
